“SO, YOU’RE THE GIRLFRIEND, eh?”

“I’m the girlfriend,” I agreed.

Justin’s Aunt Judy was staring at me like I was the biggest gold-digging whore she’d ever seen in her life, and to be honest, in that moment, I kind of felt like one.

I mean, he was paying me to be his girlfriend and soon, his wife. That was true. If we wanted to get technical, I was doing this for the money. That was kind of how it had started, anyway, but spending time with Justin was actually kind of...

Well, it was kind of wonderful.

I liked getting to hang out with him and spend time with him one-on-one. We’d done a lot of cool things lately, like going on walks together and watching movies. We’d kind of gotten into a nice little flow of how we liked to behave with each other.

Now I was meeting his family, and I was already getting the feeling that this was going to be much, much harder than I thought.

“What are your intentions with my nephew?” Judy asked, glaring at me.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me,” she said. Judy crossed her arms over her chest. The two of us were standing in the kitchen. I’d only gone in to get a glass of water. I didn’t expect to be cornered so soon in the game. I definitely didn’t expect to have her coming at me like this.

And I didn’t really have a good answer.

Lie.

I knew that I had to lie, and I knew that today was sort of a test. It was a preamble. If I did well today, then the engagement would happen, and then the wedding, and then Justin and I would have an entire year to hang out together. If I displeased his family, though, Justin might get cold feet. He might back out of the entire ordeal and find someone better suited to his needs.

Then where would I be?

“I love him,” I said firmly, setting my glass down on the counter. I crossed my own arms over my chest, mirroring her stance. Judy might be one of the older relatives in this family, but she didn’t scare me at all. If she wanted to be a cranky sourpuss, then she could be one. It didn’t mean that I had to tolerate it.

“Love,” Judy said, practically spitting out the word. “What does a human like you know about love?”

“Human?” I raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t we all human?”

Judy’s eyes widened and she snapped her mouth shut. Then she turned and left the room, marching out into the living room.

Okay, so that was really weird.

Why did she call me a human?

There were a lot of weird things that had happened since I’d come to Rawr County. Of course, the entire premise of my arrival had been strange, but human? Why was she calling me that?

I suddenly wondered if Judy was the type of crazy that believed she was secretly – or not so secretly – an alien or something like that. I made a mental note to ask Justin about it later, but I didn’t have a lot of time to ponder because his mom came in.
